FADING

The moment your tattoo is born it becomes your responsibility to nuture and protect it. You will be in charge of providing a stable & clean healing environment for your fresh ink. The skin should be generally still, clean, and dry, you should also avoid touching your tattoo for 2-4 weeks immediately after your session is over other than to follow aftercare instructions.

Why do tattoos fade?

Fading occurs for a number of reasons. Some of the factors which could increase the level of fading include: Placing the tattoo in an area that folds/twists/bends often, the use of blood thinners during the healing process, any sun bathing, swimming/soaking, an increased amount of activity that causes you to sweat or raise your blood pressure. Most of these factors are the most critical in the first few days while your tattoo is fresh.

Factors that could cause your tattoo to fade after it has healed include: Rubbing on body parts or articles of clothing regularly over an extended period of time, any damage to the skin where your tattoo is, regular digestion of the ink over many years.

Your skin acts a lot like a sponge the way it retains ink, and when your tattooed skin is freshly punctured it is still possible for ink to leave your tattoo. The more ink that leaves your tattoo, the lighter it will appear. Each little twist, fold, and bend will push ink outward toward the surface of your skin where it will dry up, and flake off as a scab during the healing process. It takes a few days for your skin to initially begin peeling around the tattoo. Peeling is the norm for all tattoos but in general we want to minimize the amount of ink that makes it back out of the skin. Your artist might recommend a bandage that is design to keep you from touching the surface of your tattoo for long enough to grow a protective layer of skin around the tattoo. Whether your tattoo peels before or after the use of the bandage you should not be alarmed. If you can provide a stable and clean environment for your tattoo to heal in you should see a smooth protective layer of skin grow over the tattoo within 2-4 weeks.
